Hailing from Nashville and with a love for The National and Radiohead, it’s fair to say that my expectations were high for what Highland Kites had to offer. An act made up of Marissa Lamar and drummer Neil Briggs, the pair have been playing and releasing music together for nearly ten years, so I’m a little ashamed to admit that ‘We Both Know It’ was my introduction to them.
The tune is the duo’s incredibly beautiful new single and takes the form of a nostalgia-laced indie-folk gem. Gentle drums and bass, a relaxed guitar, and the most emotive piano I’ve heard in a long time are the order of the day. Combine that with Marissa’s inviting and angelic vocals, and what you have is a mesmerizing and soul-stirring piece of music.
As for the meaning behind the track, Marissa takes a deep dive into her very being. “It’s an honest confession of the flaws in my personality and how they affect my relationships,” she says. “It’s an introspective exploration of my inner self and it serves as a catalyst for my personal growth”.
Highland Kites have not only met my lofty expectations – they’ve gone above and beyond, delivering a song that will unquestionably live with me for a long time. Bravo! We cannot wait to hear more!
