I find myself once again grateful to my colleague and fellow writer, Gabriel Mazza. It was he who recently introduced me to the Munich-based indie-rock duo Deer Park Avenue, and I’ve been loving their entire discography ever since! An act comprised of two sisters (Sarah and Steph) of Indian-American descent, Deer Park Avenue’s sound is fresh, dynamic, and above all, deeply honest.
Last month, the pair unleashed their ‘Dark and Stormy’ EP. Featuring six original tunes that showcase the duo’s genre-bending and versatile musicality, it’s track two, ‘Darkness Hides Me’, that I’d like to introduce you to today. A hypnotising and atmospheric song, it sees the sisters piece together a synthy, dark-pop masterpiece. With folk harmonies sprinkled throughout proceedings, an extra layer of intrigue and charm is added, and it’s really the perfect tune in so many ways.
“Darkness makes you turn to catch the light,” the sisters say. “Some of the worst things that happen to you can turn into the best things”.
Working alongside renowned bassist Matt Bissonette (Joe Satriani, Ringo Starr, Elton John) and Grammy Award-winning producer Reto Peter (Green Day, Modest Mouse, Counting Crows,) Deer Park Avenue are in extremely safe hands when it comes to their inevitable rise to the top!
