A slice of playful sleaze and rebellious euphoria, ‘Wilted Bloom’ takes us back to the glory of the punk era. We were in college in the early ‘2000s, and Travis Barker was a national hero (still to this day). Hailing from Detroit, The Idiot Kids source inspiration from that very same cultural landscape, taking it into the modern realms with charisma and light eclecticism. ‘Wilted Bloom’ is the strongest evidence of that; although essentially a pop-punk anthem, its sonic profile is much more nuanced, at times dark and complex, with a distinct lo-fi quality and pungent distortions.
Good: such a quirky and unique formula makes the band rather special. They are not just following trends, they are making them. It takes courage, and although ‘Wilted Bloom’ might appear too straightforward for the modern post-punk fashion, the keen listener will be quick to pick up a certain panache and uplifting energy in it.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, The Idiot Kids explain: “A song about the allure of relapse to an addict’s brain and the constant fight against it.” Recorded in a basement (in true retro style) ‘Wilted Bloom’ is part of the group’s latest EP, ‘Chapels’.
