We were writing about ‘Fair Isle Automatic’ not long ago, describing it as a “punchy, sleazy and haunting slice of post-punk energy”. We stand by our words: Leveller really hits the mark when it comes to evocative, edgy and nostalgic material, something that’s reiterated in ‘You, Fading Out of View’, the latest effort by the Bristol-based creative. Slightly more conventional than its predecessor, the track embraces new wave stylings with religious fidelity, echoing seminal British bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure, among others.
Built on a fast-paced, straight drum beat, ‘You, Fading Out of View’ lays a tight and continuous bassline, the perfect setting for shimmering guitars and emotional arpeggios. It’s a simple song on the surface, but it leaves a lasting mark, especially once the chorus kicks in. A tapestry of textures suddenly comes into play, elevating the record to full vintage glory.
Leveller’s vocals are on point as always, with their mysterious energy and low-registry character. Truth to be told, the human behind Leveller, is extremely talented, taking charge not only of the song and vocals but also of the majority of the instrumental background (except drums). Talk about destiny, eh…
