As this is our first encounter with Canadian songstress Shaela Miller, it took us a while to fully grasp the magnitude of her artistry. Describing her solely as a country artist equals to selling her short; in truth, she’s an enlightened lyricist, penning slices of pop elegance drenched in dreamy vibes and classic country nostalgia.
‘After the Masquerade’ is the more evident example of it: an eclectic, soothing and sumptuous gem bathing in Kate Bush-esque vocal tone and delicate slide guitars. Acting as a glueing agent, vintage electronic atmospheres and retro synthetisers push the record into stellar territories. Certainly a masterpiece!
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, she explains: “The song tackles important subject matter, not often talked about – yet experienced by many. It tells a story of misinterpreted consent that evolves into feelings of shame and helplessness. I hope when my listeners hear this song, they hear the story.”
