They shared a rather radical statement: “We don’t expect anything from anyone, but we do want to share something we believe in with fellow lovers of this art form.” Immensely refreshing, the American band makes music that they believe in, material that pleases their ears first and foremost. Not following trends, not aching for commercial success; King In Yellow are themselves, their pure, unfiltered artistic selves.
You know what? It’s an attitude that truly works. Take their latest single ‘Lightning Returning’, for instance. It’s an effortless masterpiece. Built over a unique blend of new wave, post-punk and garage tones, the record is a cascade of hazy guitars and furious drums, misty vocals and unapologetic riffs. It is so original and memorable. Not sounding like anyone else. Sure, we can trace its origins, but King In Yellow offers their puzzle, a delicate mixture of sonic bliss put together with charisma and panache.
Part nostalgic and part rebellious, ‘Lightning Returning’ is extremely energetic, building up towards an all-out finale. Distortions are fuzzy and thin, yet crunchy and dreamy. A band to look out for – and a damn good record.
