Wotts Share Kaleidoscopic Gem ‘WANNABE’

It wasn’t long ago when we were featuring ‘ALLO’, a single we proudly described as “another absolute winner”. Busy building the hype towards their upcoming EP, ‘Petals’, Wotts now unveils another slice of goodness from that very same record, ‘WANNABE’. The Canadian duo confirms everything we knew about them: kaleidoscopic productions, light psychedelia, and a distinct retro flair. Quite irresistible, really.

A quick look at their Spotify profile tells us that their audience is getting bigger and bigger by the day, an endeavour that’s aided by a discography that’s now becoming pretty sizeable. They have certainly evolved – gone are the lo-fi bedroom pop days of ‘Sunnyside’ – but their overall aesthetic remains the same. Nuanced and elegant sound design, in the form of ethereal synthetisers drenched in spacious effects and chorus modulations.

In fact, they use a specific term to describe their style – ‘Australian psych-pop’ – a definition that fits them well, but that perhaps sells them a bit short. While Tame Impala has certainly influenced a huge number of creatives around the world, the very same references used by Kevin Parker can be traced back to plenty of sources through the 70s, 80s and 90s. In that sense, we feel like it’s time to decolonise Wotts’ artistic style from the Impala livery, recognizing their wide eclecticism and rich sonic profile.

Welcoming Wotts into their most glorious era, we look forward to their upcoming EP.
