Embarking on a little side-quest, Norwegian creative Mono Martian shares a wholesome and emotional collaboration with his daughter, Iris Stardust, recording a charming cover of ‘Come As You Are’, by seminal American group Nirvana. Leaving behind nuanced arrangements and folk-flavoured indietronica, Martian tries to keep it simple, leaving ample space for his daughter’s vocals to flourish.
The contrast between such a gritty, intense song and an innocent vocal tone is pretty confusing at first, providing a listening experience that’s valuable and transformative. Once the harmonies come in, ‘Come As You Are’ assumes a dystopic identity, hypnotising the listener with its soothing stylings and repetitive structure.
Described as “a collaboration between generations X and Z”, the single might feel corny at first – after all, covering Nirvana is still a grey territory. But once you let yourself go to it, it’s hard not to recognize the immense artistic force that’s being generated by Mono Martian and Iris Stardust.
Describing the reasoning behind the track, he explains: “Experiencing a sense of not belonging or feeling like an outsider is something that can be felt at any age. This is where music works its magic. It resonates with you and perfectly articulates the emotions you hold inside.”
