Incredibly fresh and contemporary, ‘Ectothermic’ perfectly fits the modern, gritty indie pop made notable by acts such as Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers. On a bed of shoegaze-flavoured guitars and light distortions, julip builds a dreamy yet intense sonic panorama, the perfect setting for her evocative and rebellious vocals. We really love this record, it’s got all the strengths we usually look for: poignancy, nostalgia, blissfulness and punchiness, all packed together into an inspiring and relatable package.
julip’s debut effort, ‘Ectothermic’ is certainly a strong first single, really opening the road for a glorious career. Judging by what we heard so far, we can only be excited to hear more from the American creative. Hailing from San Francisco, julip is not only a talented musical wizard but also a software engineer.
Such a scientific background is certainly mirrored in the single’s title, a play on the word ‘ecothermic’, a biology term referring to cold-blooded organisms. It’s then flexed into her own personal experience regarding a past relationship. As the song declares: “The fact you don’t want to talk / Is really getting me off / I want to keep you burning / But you’re so ectothermic.”
