If you are used to Evol Walks’ fierce and punchy rock’n’roll, you are bound to be greatly surprised by their latest release, a mellower version of their past hit ‘Sleeping with a Ghost’. There’s a lot to unpack here: first of all, the track gets stripped from the group’s signature immersive wall of sound, often built up over hard distortion and sleazy drum grooves.
Instead, the Australian band delves into acoustic territories, favouring a charming acoustic guitar and feathery textures, a sonic choice that’s able to highlight the frankly stunning and evocative vocals of Evol Walks’ head honcho Leah Martin-Brown. We are also finally able to appreciate Brown’s nuanced and complex songwriting, perfectly fitting her luscious tone.
If you weren’t familiar with ‘Sleeping with a Ghost’, this is probably a good time to get on it. You’ll be instantly hooked by the single’s euphoric and powerful sonic landscape, able to wrap the listener in a legendary aura and cathartic energy.
