A wholesome and soothing offering, ‘the ocean (i could die)’ is the sonic transposition of Peri Rae’s research of radical authenticity. Making an impromptu move from her hometown to a travelling van, the young songstress initiated a period of introspection and personal reflection, something that’s incredibly valuable when exploring her musical output. You see, not every artist has something meaningful to say. For some, it’s a styling exercise. Instead, Rae proudly sings about her newly found freedom and spiritual peace, doing so with gentle acoustic tones and evocative vocals.
Sonically, ‘the ocean (i could die)’ is highly satisfying. Moving at a slow pace, the track still manages to pack tons of intensity and emotional value, providing the perfect framework for Peri’s crepuscular vocals and calm delivery. Around the halfway mark, the record evolves into a gritty and poignant pop-rock anthem, with Rae screaming her life purpose with blissful energy.
Written over a beach-powered songwriting session, with collaborator Chris Bourne (Busted, Hollywood Ending), ‘the ocean (i could die)’ is deservingly one of Peri Rae’s best singles so far. As she explains: “This song follows my story from my lowest to my highest, and the build in the song mirrors that. It’s a celebration of life, nature and of creativity out of the city.”
