‘Excogitation’ is one of those records you cannot really read about. It needs to be experienced, as its primary meaning delves into providing an overwhelming and transformative sensory experience. It does that through the enlightened use of leftfield electronica, experimenting with compositional techniques and pointillistic sounds. A record that’s not for everybody, but that should be embraced, as it provides much-needed escapism and a chance for personal reflection.
Divided into two long pieces – ‘Excogitation1’ and ‘Excogitation 2’, – the release has all the cards to stand out in the avant-garde electronica realm, also given the talent of its author. Composed by New York-based sonic hero One Of Them, ‘Excogitation’ goes beyond the beaten path, opening new horizons of human consciousness and deep introspecticism. Also known as Niko Dalagelis by day, One Of Them uses random, slow-paced sequences to trigger digital tones and analogue synthetisers.
The result is absolutely majestic, a record to be enjoyed in solitary, preferably after dark. As One Of Them explains: “I tried to open a gateway to a state of blissful self-exploration. Through enchanting tones, soothing atmospheres, and contemplative nuances, this work acts as an auditory catalyst, fostering a connection between the listener’s consciousness and the musical experience.”
