War Violet Shares Majestic Gem ‘Different Formations’

Championed by seminal labels such as Bella Union in the UK and Kill Rock Stars in the US, War Violet appears to have drawn extensive industry attention to her artistic output. It doesn’t surprise us: the American songstress boasts a highly hypnotising and nuanced brand of pop-folk, delivered with charisma and a certain cinematic energy. ‘Different Formations’ is exactly that: a nugget of acoustic goodness embraced by majestic strings and an overall anthemic, if not legendary, character.

Based in New York, War Violet is known by day as Jummy Aremu, talented singer-songwriter with a knack for metaphorical and witty storytelling. While having released music sporadically a few years ago, ‘Different Formations’ can be considered her debut on the bigger global stage, this time with some illustrious companionship (Cocteau Twins’ Bella Union to start with).

Delving into the inspiration behind the track, War Violet explains: “Different Formations’ is about coming to terms with the decay of our earth and atmosphere, and our search for meaning. It is about the ways in which we live on earth like we want to escape it. I wanted to indulge in the chaos and irony of earth, and make a song that was beautiful, but sad. A letter to the wonderful and horrifying chaos of earth, a place where there is extreme beauty, but also decay, all happening at once.”
