Ettie has been a familiar face in our publication these past few years. Boasting a unique and contemporary sonic aesthetic, we described the project as “deep-rooted emo-nostalgia”, especially when featuring her previous single ‘Miserable Life’. Now, the London-based creative returns with another fierce, punchy and relatable gem, ‘Marty McFly’ a track that feels greatly introspective and drenched in personal experience.
Built on Ettie’s signature pop-punk stylings, ‘Marty McFly’ is a decisively more nuanced offering, blending fuzzy and hard-hitting band-powered matter with melancholic lyricism. Recounting the time it took her to come out as Queer and exit the closet, Ettie wonders how things would be different if she had realized it during her younger years. We are confident a wide audience will connect to the song, especially given its honest, fragile and open character.
Everyone drives their own journey towards authenticity and finding their true self, and timing can and will be different in most cases. For Ettie, that meant coming to terms with her queerness in her early 20s’ – and although she might feel some sort of regret towards that, we are just happy to have been gifted a wonderful record that’s bound to inspire a plethora of young and not-so-young listener.
