Widening the scope of her artistry, JILL delves into brighter and kaleidoscopic pop territories, while maintaining the level of lyrical poignancy she is known for. Having released a debut album earlier this year – ‘Aftermath’ – the Manchester-based songstress now returns with a record that’s bound to take her to the next chapter of her musical journey. ‘But You Lied’ leaves Americana and Folk influences behind, embracing a contemporary, synth-powered outlook that works well with JILL’s evocative and charming vocals.
Built on mellow and emotional matter, the single moves with ethereal energy and soothing character, layering angelic vocal harmonies on top of long soundscapes and delivering a ballad we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
Lyrically, ‘But You Lied’ delves into manipulative relationships; as JILL explains: “The inspiration behind this track is reflecting on being in a relationship with someone who charms and manipulates you into not noticing all the red flags. In retrospect, you realise that the person hurting you wasn’t all that surprising because they had already shown you their true character; you just weren’t ready to see it.”
