Domax Pivots the Old Towards the New in ‘Element’

We are pretty familiar with Domax, having featured some of his earlier records on our blog – namely ‘Volca’ and ‘New Moon’. Safe to say, the project is the embodiment of eclecticism and experimentation, with Domax navigating everything in the leftfield realm, from synth-powered glitches to more organic influences. Now, the London-based musician returns with a new offering, ‘Element’. Behind the EP there’s a peculiar story, in the sense that it wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a demo set for an upcoming live show.

Made up of melodies and loops from Domax’s past material, ‘Element’ becomes a sort of memento mori, a summary of what once was, and the evidence that to move forward one has to scramble the past first. Featuring four dynamic and eclectic tracks, the EP jumps from synthwave gems such as ‘Chrone’ to more dancy tunes – the title track – to afrobeat grooves performed with real drums, as seen in ‘Dlr’. ‘Lotus’ brings the record to a close in a rather mesmerising way, packing dancy beats and arpeggiated synthetisers.

Delving into the reasoning behind the project, Domax explains: “I listen to so much different music I’m always trying to create my own version of the things I like the most without sounding like a copy of anything that is already out there. I love melody/texture/big beats and big bass lines.”
