Step into the intriguing and immersive world of Mama Blue, the musical project of Athens-based progressive artist Kate Bleboutzaki. Just the other day, I came across her latest tune ‘Mother Of The Night’, and I was completely swept up and absorbed in her unique, Balkan-inspired sound.
I knew I had to find out more about the musician behind the tune, and was thrilled when Kate agreed to an interview! Speaking to us about the inspiration behind ‘Mother Of The Night’, how she transforms an idea into a song, and which albums she’d take with her to a deserted island, please give a big welcome to our new friend Mama Blue!
Hey Kate, it’s great to have you here with us! Your debut single as Mama Blue came back in 2019 with ‘Salem’, and I’m wondering if you could give our readers a brief overview of what has led you to where you are today musically.
Hey there! I’m so happy to be interviewed by your team. It all started when I was a little girl like all the stories begin. I was really close to my late father who introduced me to all these beautiful vinyl records he had in his collection. I was mesmerized seeing my father so happy, and thrilled about all his stories. Stories about The Rolling Stones, his favorite band, and how many times he travelled to see them live. Every record he owned was also a crazy story that left me speechless each time. I still own his collection and through the years I keep digging through it. I came to the conclusion that each genre is beautiful so, somehow, I wanted to create my own genre. I didn’t know how until I started to read about my ancestors and my history and that’s something unique. Each one of us has a unique background that needs to be heard and connected to the world.
Your brand new tune ‘Mother Of The Night’ immediately drew me in and piqued my curiosity. It’s such a unique and captivating piece of music. Can you share some insight into what the song means to you?
As I was saying, each one of us has a unique background and that’s exactly what ‘Mother Of The Night’ represents. I’m originally from Asia Minor, a beautiful place with a crazy story. Most specifically, Smyrna was a place known for the spices and ofc the mesmerizing witches. These women were my grandmothers and I really wanted to honor them through this song. We all need to be connected with our roots. That’s what makes us who we are!
We’re always intrigued by artists’ creative processes, and how they take an idea and transform it into a finished product. Could you tell us a bit about your creative process?
What triggers me the most to write a song is an experimental sound. I need to make sure I get the right beat before writing. It comes naturally when I hear something really special. It’s hard to find the right sound though for sure. I have an amazing team that helps me get through the song. Black Siren Studio is my safe place where I feel free to create.
Who are some of the artists or musicians that have had the most significant impact on your sound and style?
That’s a really tough question but my top 5 would be:
Beyoncé, Madonna, Sevdaliza, Ella Fitzgerald, and Prince. I know, really random, right?
I’m always curious as to how band or artist names come about. I just can’t help myself! Is there a story behind Mama Blue?
It’s very simple! “Mama” comes from the term Mother which is used in the ballroom scene. I’m really inspired by the queer community and I want my music to be a safe place for all these beautiful people. “Blue” comes from my actual name Bleboutzaki. Ble means Blue in Greek and everybody called me blue since I was a baby.
When you’re not creating new music, what keeps you busy and what do you enjoy doing?
I love anything creative in this lifetime. I studied fashion and that’s been my profession for almost 10 years now. I’ve worked with many avant-garde designers and I’ve also styled many shows and photo shoots. Fashion is something that comes naturally to me.
OK, Kate – desert island time! You’re allowed to grab 3 albums before being stranded on an island. Which do you choose?
Hmm…tough one!
‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac
‘Lemonade’ by Beyoncé
‘Ison’ by Sevdaliza
Thanks so much for chatting with us Kate, it’s been really great getting to know you a little bit better! What comes next for Mama Blue?
It was great talking to you! The official music video for ‘Mother Of The Night’ is coming out this Friday and I’m so excited for this. Also, I’m in the studio creating more music that soon will be released.
