At the beginning of this year, Seattle-based indie-folk singer/songwriter Rusty Reid put out his third full-length album in the form of ‘Bayou Line (Songs from Houston)’. An eclectic mix of country, rock, folk, and Americana, the seventeen-song record showcases Rusty’s incredible songwriting and storytelling ability. Today, however, I’d like to laser in on track seven ‘Rio Frio’, a tune that Reid originally wrote for a rock opera that never came to fruition. Telling the story of Texas’ independence from Mexico, before it became a part of the United States, ‘Rio Frio’ is a delicate and sweetly euphonic little number that I just can’t get enough of!
Seen through the eyes of an injured cowboy who is thinking of his sweetheart far away, ‘Rio Frio’ is a track unlike any I’ve heard for quite some time – and not just due to its lyrical content. The truth is…I can’t quite put my finger on why this tune has so effortlessly wormed its way into my heart. I’m just glad that it has!
