There’s a strong raw, primitive and fierce character in Cam Cole’s latest effort, a stunning and powerful album titled ‘Unleash’. Oscillating between Stoner and Blues-rock, the record explores the smoky, amp-wrenching side of rock’n’roll, channelling highly saturated guitar tones, cowbell-powered drums and general fuzziness. Boasting a strong history of busking through the streets of London, Cole’s music feels anchored in reality, almost absorbing the grittiness of the British capital and then releasing it in musical form.
Opener ‘Truth To Be Told’ introduces the album in stunning fashion. Blending bluesy guitars with catchy hooks, the track won’t be forgotten anytime soon. ‘Freedom’ focuses on more grunge and stoner rock matter, although the cowbell is a feature that’s never missing. ‘Look Into The Moon’ showcases itself as the record’s mellow episode, offering a rare insight into Cam’s more fragile artistic side.
Those are the themes overall: ‘Unleash’ smells like USA but speaks British – specifically Welsh, having been recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales. A fitting album for the self-described “heaviest one-man band in the world”.
