A collaborative effort between visionary creatives OhEm and DJ Tarquin, ‘Bumps’ could be best described as ‘futuristic’. Over four tracks, the EP provides a surprising listening experience, delving into leftfield electronica, bassline/footwork sonic stylings and hyperpop vocals. Authentic and original, the record is certainly one of the freshest music we have heard this year, pushing the boundaries of pop music further up the electronic ladder.
‘Lara Croft Guns’ is one of our favourites on the EP, truly showcasing OhEm’s vocal flexibility and her eclectic, pioneering artistry. There are a lot of hyper-pop flavourings in it, enhanced by DJ Tarquin’s fuzzy, gritty and hard-hitting synth bass patches. Crucially, the pair will take the stage on 14th September at Bermondsey Social Club, in London. We might be there, what about you?
Speaking about ‘Bumps’, OhEm explains: “In some ways the lyrics to Bumps were a way for me to create my own femme pop space in Bassline, which to an extent I had maybe always felt a little like I was too girly and uncool for. The Bumps girl doesn’t really always get the scene but she’s loving it and she wants everyone to know, I guess that’s me – I’m the Bumps girl.”
