Describing his project as “something that repeatedly saved my life over the past few years”, Andrew Durkin reveals something important and crucial about his artistry: he’s in it for the soul-searching, healing power of music, rather than for commercial reasons. That’s a rare gift in today’s industry landscape, and frankly, would be good to have more artists like Andrew. People who are dedicated to delivering stunning material drenched in personal introspection.
‘The Cage’ is Durkin’s latest single. Penned in early 2020 (pre-pandemic) as part of a previous ensemble, the record would soon signal an artistic breakthrough for the Portland-based songwriter, who now champions a solo project (although Andrew’s works are often collaborative).
Built over charming and fuzzy guitar tones, ‘The Cage’ places itself at the intersection of Americana, Country and Rock, building a compelling sonic framework for Durkin’s deep and evocative vocals, quite elegant and charming. Speaking about the song, Andrew explains: “The track was written in January 2020, so its theme of psychic and emotional isolation preceded any lockdown orders or social distancing. But once Leo, Dennis Carter, and I started working on the track, the unfolding of world events steered us toward a heavier, grittier mood and sound.”
