There are a few different angles one should approach ‘Secret’ from. First, the purely musical one. A slice of sleazy and soulful summery RnB, the single feels fresh while drenched in tradition. Built over a charming and intricate production, ‘Secret’ provides the perfect home for SLÖZA’s evocative and luscious vocals, so controlled, relaxed and elegant. Not to mention the many vocal harmonies the song seems to thrive on. Everything points towards a stunning record, and honestly, it’s one of the best RnB efforts we have heard lately.
There’s then another crucial aspect to ‘Secret’, that being the fragile and complex emotional framework it stems from. You see, SLÖZA is originally from Ukraine, and she was living there when the Russian aggression happened. That meant she had to flee, relocating to the UK, where she had previously lived too. In a way, ‘Secret’ is a longing towards the fuzzy and warm feeling of summer, perhaps also indicating SLÖZA’s willingness to return to lighter themes.
Speaking about the lyricism behind ‘Secret’, she explains: “For me, it’s a significant achievement to be able to notice summer again. It’s like coming back to life. I was very much inspired by stories of many women and their secrets – how they cure themselves, what their safe place is. My safe place is being so much in love. And my partner is my endless summer – no matter what the season.”
