Dean the Dream Shares Introspective and Intense Gem ‘Black’

It took us a while to really connect with and understand Dean the Dream’s musical output. You see, the San Francisco-based visionary champions a rather unique flair for slow-core, psychedelic and mellow material, drenched in luscious guitars, light saturation and spacious reverbs. It’s almost melodramatic – as if Dean was trying to pack as much melancholia and sadness as possible in a mere three, four-minute record.

‘Black’ is the perfect example of that; the project’s latest effort, the single manage to feel both nostalgic and poignant, exploring themes of depression and disconnection from reality. What’s more, ‘Black’ is part of a dyad with previous release ‘Heartbeat’, a track that – although more upbeat and punchy – still sources its lyricism from the same introspective material. In fact, the two create quite a stark contrast, explained well by Dean the Dream as “the subjective duality of the mental vs the physical.”

‘Black’ is perhaps the project’s most compelling offering, showcasing the American songwriter’s inner fragility, delivered so masterfully by his intense, evocative vocals, deep yet malleable and friendly. The track is taken from his upcoming full-length offering, ‘One Season Too Long’.
