Steadily building his artistic profile for the past couple of years, Vanderzee has now flourished into an eclectic creative being, freely navigating between genres and cultural references. The result is music that feels unique, at times quirky, and often experimental. Not a surprise, given Vanderzee’s roots in classic music. A gifted guitarist, the Upstate New York resident bathes in the kaleidoscopic nature of his artistry, delving into the most diverse plethora of genres.
‘Divergent’ is the project’s ultimate manifesto. The latest album by Vanderzee, it features fourteen tracks, all drenched in personal introspection and life experiences. Showcasing the aforementioned eclecticism, let’s focus on two particular pieces: ‘I Feel Amazing’, an electronic, cinematic and hyper-pop-filled banger, and its contrasting follow-up, fuzzy rock gem ‘Don’t Count Me Out’.
Earlier in the record, ‘The Chance to Slow Down’ wraps the listeners in decadent soundscapes, perfectly complimented by ‘Let It All Out’, a rather psych and vaporwave-flavoured offering. Delving into the album’s intense lyricism, Vanderzee explains: “It serves as an affirmation that despite newfound maturity and self-awareness, the rebellious, misunderstood child within us never grows up”.
