When approaching Mortal Prophets, one must be ready to enter an unfamiliar place. Championing a rather unique artistic outlook, the project navigates the obscure corners of rock and pop, delivering material that feels innovative and boundaries-seeking, while drenched in tradition. Headed by John Beckmann’s kaleidoscopic musicianship, Mortal Prophets could be a mirage, in the sense that its vibrant character is almost unbelievable, able to hypnotise listeners in less than two minutes.
Luckily, the project is very much a reality: ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’ is the strongest evidence of it, a staple of blues adapted into Beckmann’s own stylings. The song loses its ‘chant-like’ quality, focusing on spacious and ethereal soundscapes interlaced by brief drum and guitar episodes.
Taken from Mortal Prophets’ upcoming album ‘Dealey Plaza Blues’, ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’ joins an impressive tracklist packed with ten covers, all drenched into the project’s unique sonic goo. Look out for it!
