Powers of the Monk Returns with Kaleidoscopic Folk Jewel ‘Firefly’

Emerging from Detroit, Powers of the Monk are a rather authentic and original beast; while championing a proud folk aesthetic, their sonic references are broader, encompassing rock and pop stylings when convenient. ‘Firefly’ is their latest effort, perhaps the perfect introductory tune to their eclectic sound.

Essentially, Powers of the Monk are a trio built on violin, guitar and drums, with the occasional keys insert. It is the violin that greatly characterizes the group’s aesthetic, giving their tracks a decisively ‘theatrical’ flair, if you will. The double male/female vocals blend works well too, adding more variety to an already intriguing offering.

Lyrically, ‘Firefly’ explores a fictional storyline, with a wannabe terrorist believing a firefly is sending him secretly coded messages. His delusion is so acute that makes him believe he must act on them. Self-produced, we believe the record serves Powers of the Monk well, adding a spicy ingredient into the mix – that 60s psychedelic character that we miss so much nowadays.
