‘Follow the Rules’ is the dark and dreamy new single from Ukrainian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carter Lagrant. It’s the artist’s first release of 2023 and it sees Carter continue on his experimental electro, hip-hop, and alternative rock journey. It’s a seriously interesting fusion of sounds and styles, and the musician pulls off the concoction with confidence and finesse. From the haunting keys to the deep, hypnotic drums and Lagrant’s euphoric vocals, ‘Follow the Rules’ has melted its way into my heart and I refuse to let it go!
Lyrically and thematically, it’s a tune about breaking the rules, stereotypes, and certain expectations that society has imposed on people. Carter was forced to leave his home in Ukraine in 2014 and move to Poland, a move that was extremely difficult but also filled with growth. “I acquired some features I never had,” he says. “Self-confidence, decisiveness, self-awareness”.
The artist is gaining quite a reputation for his unique and distinctive sound. As he blends the audaciousness of British alternative rock with the subtle allure of electronic tones, Carter Lagrant is creating thought-provoking and introspective soundscapes that are simply too intriguing to ignore.
