First off, let me just say this. ‘The Wolf’ is, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting and intriguing EPs that I have ever had the pleasure of coming across. Released just a few days ago, it comes courtesy of the Toronto-based four-piece 5th PROJEKT, a cinematic art-rock band. Inspired by band members Tara Rice and Sködt McNalty’s forty-day journey under The Milky Way following ley lines on the Camino Santiago de Compostela, ‘The Wolf’ is a mystical, psychedelic, experimental, avant-garde, and mesmerising adventure.
‘Autopilot Disengage’ begins the EP. It’s an avant-pop tune with a rather haunting bassline and sparse drums. Rice makes her vocal entrance with airy and ethereal confidence, as airline announcements are eerily scattered throughout the track. ‘Vagabond’ follows ‘Autopilot Disengage’ and has a dreamy, shoegazy vibe. Rice again showcases her ridiculous vocal ability, as 5th PROJEKT transport you to another time, another space.
‘The Wrong Way’ and ‘The Pace’ round up the EP respectively and, without giving too much away, are both exceptional songs in their own right. The genre-bending talent that these musicians possess is astounding, and the best news is that there is more to come! ‘The Wolf’ is the first EP in a trilogy, with ‘The Owl’ scheduled for 2024 and ‘The Bee’ still to be announced.
