‘I Ate a Bouquet Of Flowers’ might seem simple on the surface, but it contains a great deal of artistic research and creative prowess. Penned by Brooklyn-based troubadour The Broadest Blue, the song found its metaphorical storytelling in the spurge of a moment – being written quickly, in a spark of inspiration. Yet, the stunning imagery and underlying songwriting formula reveal a deeper picture, the painting of a life spent fighting against one’s own luck.
Kurt Juergens defines said bouquet as “an actual obstruction in the life of this man who had planned to share them with another”. We feel like personal introspection is rather relevant in this case, allowing the listeners to find their own meaning behind The Broadest Blue’s cryptic lyricism. From a sonic standpoint, the single was recorded in one take, with both guitar and vocals captured at the same time.
Such authenticity is honestly quite refreshing, showcasing the true artistic flair the project has to offer. As The Broadest Blue explains: “It’s riskier to record everything together, because it’s much harder to tweak things afterwards… but I think the result sounds more live and genuine and warm”.
