Canning Return with Fierce Single ‘State of Mind’

Introduced by a series of dazzling drum fills, ‘State of Mind’ jumps straightway to its psych and glam identity. Boasting groove and fierceness, the track is the perfect companion to Canning’s euphoric energy and raw, charming vocals, here delivered with a certain playfulness. Hailing from Chicago, the group manages to balance melodic songwriting and distorted guitar tones very well, making for a single that’s friendly and relatable, yet hard-hitting.

Featuring Ricky Canning on guitar and vocal, Fritz Armstrong on bass and vocal, and Tom Miller on drums, Canning have been a project long in the making, with the group finding its beginning in the early ‘2000s. They are not done yet, continuing to get together and spread banter during rehearsal, as they so eloquently explain.

‘State of Mind’ is actually a really good record. You see, it might not be super polished or very modern, but it’s relevant and well-built, the right balance between rock, funky and pop. Vocals have a welcome glam character to them. Speaking about the song, the band explain: “The song is about the new and embracing that new which in hopes influences future new in a brighter way and hopefully, adjusting some of the old too”.
