When we first approached ‘Everybody Has a Story’, we didn’t fully know what we were walking into. It is not just a song, but also a monument to the talent and experience of two acclaimed and successful Swedish songwriters, Mats Dernánd and Emma Nilsdotter, working together on an absolute masterpiece. Exploring a pompous and classic pop sound with Spaghetti western influences, “Everybody Has a Story’ was originally written by Dérnand, who found his lyrics perfect for Nilsdotter’s vocals.
The addition of Emma Nilsdotter adds particular prestige to the piece, with her being a hit songwriter and renowned performer across Sweden and internationally. Lending her evocative and luscious vocal tone to the record, she gifts the track a peculiar and refreshing character, blending well with Dernánd’s inspired artistry.
Between harmonicas and vocal harmonies, ‘Everybody Has a Story’ is an absolute joy to listen to, exploring the way we tend to judge people too quickly. Describing the idea behind the piece, Mats explains: “We all carry around a lot of stuff that we tend to keep to ourselves. We find it easy to judge each other, but we rarely know what’s behind it. We need to be able to forgive people who have treated us badly for us to be free ourselves”
