In Spring 2024, we were busy writing about Jae Markwick and his artistry as “reflective and intense, yet elegant and relatable”. ‘The love you give’ was the record in question, a mellow, bucolic hip-hop piece with tons of evocative energy. Since then, the Australian creative has been hard at work, compiling a whole album, out now. ‘what’s next for us?’ is exactly what one would expect from Markwick: modern, dynamic hip-hop with hard-hitting lyricism.
Opener ‘butterfly kisses’ introduces the album in a playful fashion, with funky guitars and a witty beat perfectly accompanying Jae’s slick, elegant flow. The mood changes pretty soon, in line with the breakup story that provides the songwriting basis for the whole body of work. Delving into Markwick’s personal experience, the album serves as a cathartic, expressive outlet in the midst of a painful period.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘what’s next for us?’, Jae explains: “Following the end of a four-year relationship, each track captures a stage of grief, from denial to acceptance. With soul-baring lyrics and evocative melodies, this album is for anyone struggling to let go and move forward.”
