Channelling an authentically wholesome Folk and Americana outlook, Nashville-based duo The Prickly Pair are somewhat of a hidden gem in the current musical landscape. You see, their music doesn’t follow a precise recipe, rather, it draws inspiration from the pair’s nuanced and kaleidoscopic artistries, blending conventional folk matter with more eclectic textures and indie tropes. The result is what we are able to hear today in ‘Long Gone’, the band’s latest effort.
In it, the listener will be met with soothing, comforting yet nostalgic tones, often built on acoustic guitar, mellow keys and brushed drums, all supporting the melancholic lyricism so proudly championed by The Prickly Pair. Formed during the pandemic, the project also sees its two talented founders – Irene Greene and Mason Summit – as real-life partners, creating a deeper and stronger bond than a simple musical endeavour.
Recorded between L.A. and Nashville, ‘Long Gone’ is first and foremost a reaction to the solitude instilled by the various lockdowns. We can hear it in its sonic features, with a slow-paced and steady arrangement accompanying the listener through a polite journey into The Prickly Pair’s personal experience. As they explain: “a depression daydream about leaving one’s life behind and driving alone through the expansive California desert.”
