If we had to describe ‘Floating’ in one word, it would probably be ‘transformative’. From the ethereal and dreamy electronic textures – so well contrasted by the punchier beats – to the unique lyricism that inspires the track, everything screams escapism and reframing, as if FLOTSZAM gave us access to her inner artistic world, a place where we can potentially reframe our own living experience, facilitated by ‘Floating’s hypnotising sonic qualities.
The project’s first single in 2023, the record is a worthy follow-up to last year’s ‘Under the Same Sky’, the start of a new artistic deal for the British songstress and innovator, featuring a collaboration with producer Ben Chetwood. Blending trip-hop’s dreaminess with leftfield electronica and club influences, it is clear FLOTSZAM has found a very peculiar sound recipe, one that we are confident will bring her music to a wider audience.
Lyrically, ‘Floating’ pivots around a very specific experience, a moment that allowed the London-based newcomer to connect to a deeper level of consciousness. It all happened while floating in the Adriatic Sea, in Italy. As she explains: “I felt the calm and mystery beneath both soothe and scare me. Not sinking, not swimming, with my body submerged, I felt my internal feelings of dissociation and disconnection reflected physically. The sea was like my subconscious: feelings were buried deep, with no means of release.”
