We feel particularly lucky to have stumbled upon HIEN. Truthfully, we are rather late, as the world has already taken notice of her immense talent. Having already been named one of Glamour’s ‘Women of the Year’, the Budapest-born, Vietnamese creative has built a mythical and eclectic artistic universe, quite unlike anything we have heard before. Navigating the leftfield end of contemporary pop and infusing it with Southeast Asian sensibility, HIEN has effectively carved out a space that’s exclusively hers – a striking bubble of boundary-pushing magnificence.
‘disposable’ is the perfect example of that, moving even more into electronic shores and Eurodance-flavoured grooves. A nuanced producer, songwriter and sound designer, HIEN knows exactly what she’s doing from an aural palette perspective. That’s perhaps why her records are always so intriguing and fresh – it’s not just about the song, but also about bringing something new to the table, a slice of sonic euphoria and musical extravaganza.
Yet, the storytelling does not lack punch or purpose. ‘Disposable’ takes an inquisitive look at modern dating culture, through the playful lenses of a “Bushwick heartbreak story”. The record also comes with a hazy music video, courtesy of director Aaron Tran.
