Ray Noir Returns with Haunting, Empowering Anthem ‘Razorblade Romance’

At first look, ‘Razorblade Romance’ might appear as your typical dark, industrial alt-rock anthem. Yet, there’s much more to it: penned by London-based defier Ray Noir, the record seeks to scramble the genre’s traditional lyrical references, embracing the project’s queer and POC identity in a space that’s often dominated by ‘old world’ personalities. Growing up in Norway – a society that’s rather strict in its patriarchal roles – the talented visionary and creative was able to slowly carve out his eclectic, rebellious identity, eventually moving abroad and sharing his hard-hitting artistry with a wider public.

It’s going well; having gained the attention of the industry and many fellow alt-rock figures, Ray Noir now continues his unbreakable growth with ‘Razorblade Romance’, an uplifting, euphoric anthem laced with melancholic lyricism and personal imagery. Featuring guitar hero Steve Stevens (Billy Idol’s loyal buddy), the single does a good job of taking alt-rock into futurism, with a healthy amount of gritty, twitchy electronica and an overall haunting character. Yet, the chorus is catchy and powerful, finding a middle ground between appealing to Ray Noir’s niche and a wider audience.

Delving into the inspiration behind ‘Razorblade Romance’, the Norwegian voyager explains: “This anthem is for all the queer souls in the alt scene who feel like outsiders. Society tries to shame queer people to death, but we endure. We survive.”
