Known for pioneering a brand new genre of music called TripField, English producer and DJ Flatfoot Sam has been rather silent for the past year, especially following his 2023 ‘Zeitgeist’ EP. Recently, he returned with a heart-shaking, cathartic and intense offering, ‘Wetiko’. In it, the keen listener is met with blissful, hypnotising vocal chants and an eclectic brand of electronica, all drenched in spacious textures and almost mystical energy.
Written and produced as a reaction “for the madness of the destructive human condition that has caused so much pain and suffering over millennia”, ‘Wetiko’ is Flatfoot Sam’s firm and striking response to the collective chaos and darkness that seems to have taken over the planet. Declining such an ethos in the musical language is not easy, yet the Southampton-based artist seems to be perfectly comfortable with it.
Finding a common trait between trance-esque synths arpeggios and trip-hop richness, ‘Wetiko’ is certainly a leftfield offering, a wonderful work that shatters any genre-dependent truths you might have gone by till now. Reiterating the concept behind the record, Sam continues: “This song is a defiant but meditative bid to bring awareness to that madness in the hope it can play some small part in transcending the violence and bringing us closer to achieving collective consciousness and peace.”
