Balter Debut with Indie Heartbreak Anthem ‘someone new’

One of England’s brightest indie promises, Balter have recently unveiled their debut single, ‘someone new’, a slick, relatable nugget of teenage energy. Drenched in polite guitar tones and catchy, friendly melodies, the record takes a playful yet nuanced look at heartbreak pains and the challenges of moving on from an intense relationship.

The Northampton-based group does a good job of maintaining an elegant outlook on it, showcasing their ability to not fall into cliché or pre-conceived formulas. Instead, the contrast between the relatively buoyant and bright indie matter and the meaningful lyricism gives life to a convincing chiaroscuro, a seemingly understated song that slowly conquers the listener and doesn’t let them go.

Comprised of Tom Drury (vocals/guitar), Jake Lewis (guitar), Liam Kay (bass) and Jack Cox (drums), Balter have a bright future ahead of them, and we look forward to watching them bloom into a national sensation. They have already been noticed by the likes of BBC Introducing, among others.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘someone new’, Drury explains: “This is about the aftermath of a relationship and the overwhelming feelings of loneliness and regret. I wrote this song after a particularly painful break-up and it’s based around the idea of wanting to change myself in order to be better for them. I wanted to be the ‘someone new’ rather than her finding that in someone else.”
