The keen reader might remember Californian creative Richard Berger. Featuring his previous album ‘Retrovert’ last year, we proudly declared it a “surprisingly convincing offering” and “full of surprises”. We stand by our words: threading the fine line between contemporary flair and nostalgic tones, the American creative was able to craft an eclectic piece boasting a luscious, soulful sonic livery and modern, dynamic vocals. After a few months of silence, Berger has now returned with his latest effort, ‘Look Around’.
In it, Richard picks up exactly where he left off, although the lyricism is rather brighter and more hopeful. Going out of his way not to be introspective – something that seems to be a natural gift for him – the Los Angeles-based musician looks instead outward, noticing the bubbly reality around him. That sentiment is partly mirrored in the track’s arrangement, built on an uplifting, groovy drum pattern and a playful blend of vintage synthesizers, ‘Look Around’ is mellow, elegant and almost whimsical – yet moving with purpose and charisma.
Berger’s vocals fit the artistic picture perfectly, with their understated, casual delivery and precise intonation. Overall, the listening experience is rewarding and pleasant, sharing a message of positivity and resilience. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Richard explains: “It was pointed out to me by my son that most of my song lyrics have been introspective, melancholy. So, I decided to write an upbeat song about taking time out to appreciate the world around you and just, ‘Look Around’”.
