Described as “the perfect song for a quiet night of wine and tears,” ‘Pretty Crier’ is the moody new release from Los Angeles-based alternative pop artist Jess Elise, better known as Bashlow. Co-written and produced by Will Carpenter (Ships Have Sailed), it’s a nostalgia-laced piece of music with shimmering guitarwork and swelling drums. Bashlow’s genuine and heart-wrenching vocal performance is an absolute show-stealer – and hints at a vulnerable musician who’s not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve. It’s just pure music brilliance if I’m being completely honest.
Speaking of the track’s creation, Bashlow says that “it is a cathartic, slightly tongue-in-cheek recollection of my first college relationship which was really unhealthy and emotionally abusive. Writing this song has helped me to see how ridiculous his behaviour was and find humour in an otherwise humourless situation”.
Influenced by the likes of Halsey and Phoebe Bridgers, Bashlow currently has six singles to her name and shows little signs of slowing down any time soon. That’s good news for fans of authentic and unfiltered music, and we can’t wait to hear what she offers up next!
