Velvet Halo is the enchanting new American musical duo of vocalist and songwriter Justina Shandler and producer and songwriter David Thiele. Just a few days ago, the pair put out their self-titled debut EP, and it contains five rich and immersive tunes that I have completely fallen in love with. Described by the duo as “a mesmerizing exploration of life’s transitions and yearnings for lost youth,” the record bottles up the very essence of heartfelt vulnerability, and serves it up to listeners in a tasty and emotionally resonant package.
‘Words Fail’ gets the record underway with a waltzing piano and the most exquisite yet heartwrenching vocal performance courtesy of Justina. ‘Fool Again’ then follows and, while also piano-driven, offers a different sound compared to its predecessor. Gentle, nostalgic, superb!
‘Warm Night’ has a bit of a jazzy vibe to it, while ‘Nothing Left’ fuses melancholy and hope together in what Justina and David describe as a “Coldplay-esque crescendo”.
The EP finishes with ‘Find Me’, and that’s one for you to discover all on your own! All I’ll say is that, from beginning to end, Velvet Halo’s EP is a masterful display of storytelling and musical depth. Here’s to many more!
