There’s a strong sense of mystery and intimacy in ‘Obsession’. Built on crepuscular electronic tones, the record rejoices from misty guitar riffs, hazy synthetisers and minimal drum machines, providing the perfect sonic picture for Lullabee’s evocative and charming vocals. The London-based newcomer is decisively one of the best things we have heard this week, and it’s understandable why: although diving into pop territories, her artistic output is rather more eclectic and nuanced, with a healthy dose of indie dreaminess and alternative euphoria.
‘Obsession’ is the strongest evidence of that, being such a complex yet instantly relatable piece. Above the intricacy of such an enlightened production, Lullabee lays soft-spoken, luscious lyricism, speaking to our most basic instincts. As she explains: “The song is about the feelings of being fascinated with somebody or something”.
